The people of the Udmurt Republic used to name children after animals and plants when they were ill in order to speed up their recovery. Olga Nikolaevna thus became Jay or, in Udmurt, Dzhokopay. Out of nine brothers and sisters she and her brother were the only ones to survive the illness and continue to “sing” and to love life despite the great family tragedy.
